Why the Auto Industry NEEDS Open Source

Why the auto industry is in desperate need for open source technologies. The current system is a stagnant method that has been around and used for probably the last 20 years. Lean manufacturing helped reduce the cost of manufacturing, but has reached a plateau. I believe open source technologies could once again help revolutionize the industry.
Bio:
I am currently treasurer for a local ann arbor non-profit called a2geeks. I've worked in the Auto industry doing vision systems and error proofing for numerous years. I was published in quality magazine in 2010 on how to build your own open source vision sensor. I spoke at the 2010 quality conference on bringing open source to the auto industry. I spoke at Ann Arbor ignite on the singularity, as well as the ignite that was held at the maker faire last year.
